BEAUMARIS allotment holders have been filmed for an upcoming episode of BBC Gardeners’ World.

They recently welcomed TV presenter Frances Tophill and a film crew to the Beaumaris Allotments, back in April.

Having just taken on an allotment of her own in Kent the presenter was particularly interested in the use of seaweed, growing grapes to make wine and how to protect a plot from wind damage.

Several plot holders were interviewed, and the Beaumaris lifeboat crew assisted in the filming.

Filming took place near the town’s RNLI Lifeboat Station, due to the view from the allotments being affected by the adjacent car park, where building materials for the town’s flood alleviation work are being temporarily stored.

According to the Beaumaris gardeners, the film crew arrived on a “beautiful sunny day” and were “totally stunned” by the location of the allotments and Beaumaris itself.

They were also impressed by the high standard of the site as, despite it being very early in the season, plot holders had worked hard to get their plots looking their best for the filming.

Beaumaris Allotments Society Chairman, Andrew Dixon said “every gardener would want their garden to be featured on Gardeners’ World, so for Beaumaris Allotments to be chosen to appear is a great achievement.”

One of the plot holders featured was Dr Ian Thorpe, who was filmed explaining the benefits of using seaweed, and he also explained the restrictions for collecting it.

Another plot holder Keevan Anker was interviewed about his vineyard. .

“Frances really enjoyed getting some hands on experience and especially the pruning and training the vines” said Keevan.

The crew then moved on to Chrissy Newsham’s plot to learn how she manages the problem of wind damage from the prevailing south westerly winds.

Chrissy was able to show the various methods she uses to minimise damage to her crops.

After more filming, the crew finished the day with a wine tasting joining plot owners to try some of Keevan’s wine.

The Society presented Frances with a mug for her to use on her allotment featuring an aerial shot of the allotments taken by Off The Ground Aerial Imaging.

The show is set to be transmitted on the evenings of Friday, May 17, on BBC2 England, and on Saturday, May 18, on BBC2, Wales. Please check TV schedules for specific times.
