A GROUP of friends are putting their physical ability to the test to raise funds for two causes.

Scott Clarke, of Connah's Quay, has raised the bar this year to take part in three physically testing events, with three of his friends.

Scott, along with Colin Okorn, Mike French and Colin Edwards recently cycled 78 miles around Loch Ness and are now gearing up for their next challenge on May 12 which will see them cycle 100 miles through Birmingham.

All funds raised will be split between Parkinson's UK and Wiedemann-Steiner Syndrome (WSS) and the group will also be taking part in the Tough Mudder challenge later this year.

Scott told the Leader: "It was very good, I'm really impressed with it. Loch Ness is very scenic and it was a wet and chilly start to the day but it brightened up as we went on.

"It took us over four hours to complete and the hardest part was a five mile stage with a 12 per cent incline, that was horrific, certainly for me.

"Last year we raised over five thousand just from the Tough Mudder event so we are hoping to raise just as much, or hopefully more."

Scott's son, Lewis, was diagnosed with WSS about three years ago which is a rare genetic disorder affecting about 400 people worldwide and Paul Edwards, one of the members of the group, has recently been diagnosed with Parkinsons.

The Leader has previously reported that Lewis still struggles everyday with issues that affects his motor skills, sensory issues, development and educational needs and other long-term health problems.

Scott added: "We do train a lot, we try and do about 60 miles a week so we are used to it, but Sunday's event will be tough.

"None of us have ever done 100 miles before but it's not going to be as hilly so hopefully it will be alright.

"There's a bit of excitement and nervousness around."
