A WELCOME sign on the main road to a town has been vandalised.

The 'Welcome to Denbigh' tourist sign, situated on the A525 between Denbigh and Ruthin, has been smeared with black spray paint.

Cllr Catherine Jones, mayor of Denbigh, said she was "shocked" by the "mindless act" at such a busy time in the calendar.

It is understood the repair of the sign is the responsibility of the Denbigh Town Council.

Cllr Jones said: "I'm shocked that this would happen at this time of year. Easter is a busy period and summer is not far away.

"Denbigh is thriving and the heart of the town is so strong, so we cannot let this mindless act impact us whatsoever.

"The town council will look into repairing the sign as soon as possible."

Mark Young, county councillor for Denbigh, said: "This is a shameful act of vandalism that is a smack in the face for our town, especially for volunteers like Denbigh in Bloom and numerous other events groups.

"I hope the culprits are caught, punished financially and made to do community work to right their wrongs."

Julie O'Hara, resident, said: "I think it's very disappointing that the people of Denbigh try hard to make the town a better place to live and there's always some mindless people who spoil it.

"It does make you sad."
