A FORMER Rhyl High School pupil has published his latest book.

David Hughes, who has written three books for young people based on his experience of growing up on Gwynfryn Avenue on Rhyl’s Reso estate, has penned Future Proof Your School.

Published by Critical Publishing, David draws on his experience of working in schools in rural, suburban and inner city locations together with working with school leadership teams for County Councils, TEC/Learning and Skills Council and the Building Schools for the Future national programme.

His book is aimed at headteachers, aspiring leaders and teachers.

David said: "I’ve been able to work with teachers to help redesign learning for the 21st century in this country and abroad. Although cultures can be very different, the basic task remains the same: to have a clear and shared vision of how to improve education and well-designed mechanisms to make sure every member of staff is working in a focused way to ensure every pupil gets the opportunity to develop their talents both within school and in their life beyond it."

In the past, David has been fortunate to work on educational programmes at the Kennedy and Johnson Space Centres with a large number of NASA astronauts and administrators.

"I was able to quiz them about how they went about managing improvement and there were lots of parallels with what we try to achieve in schools in terms of clarity of procedures and teamwork," David said.

The title of the book was suggested by David's publishers.

"They liked the format and accessibility of the writing with cartoons, key issues, ‘notes from my case files’ of my personal experiences, templates and triangulation points where schools could relate the examples in the books to their own experiences."

David is already working on the second book in the series which moves from leadership to the content and delivery of the curriculum.
