TWO indefatigable Prestatyn cyclists are to get back on the saddle for another unbelievable feat of endurance this summer.

On Saturday June 29 Aries Janssens, known to his friends as ‘AJ’, and Phil Marsden will cycle the length of Wales from Cardiff back home and cover 200 miles in just 24 hours - without stopping for sleep.

While the pair successfully tackled a 400 mile journey in four days last year from Paris to Geneva, this will represent their most difficult single day challenge to date.

Mr Janssens, 41, said: “None of us have cycled close to 200 miles in one day, our furthest being around 130 miles which was challenging enough.

“We do not plan to sleep during the ride, but plan to start at 4am in Cardiff and hope to reach our destination in Prestatyn by 9pm.”

While they’re still finalising the route, and although they originally planned to travel up through Snowdonia they are considering coming closer to the boarder towards Wrexham.

Expecting to join the pair for the challenge are three friends of Mr Marsden, 43, as well as the possible inclusion of Rhyl High teacher Chris Graham on behalf Glan Clwyd Hospital's Respiratory Unit.

Mr Janssens added: “Phil’s wife has a rather rare and severe type of asthma which often sees her spending quite a bit of time in hospital or having care at home. It was Phil’s idea to try and give something back and help the unit with much needed resources.”

The cyclists are seeking to add to the impressive total of £25,000 for the Ronald McDonald House charity raised on last year’s trip, which they successfully completed despite some difficult conditions.

Mr Janssens said: “We only recently decided to take on this challenge, so fund raising has only just begun. Given the shorter time scale we don’t anticipate raising as much, but we would love to be able to raise over £4,000.

“Last year we all completed the ride. Phil did have an accident which required medical attention, but he managed to get back on and complete the distance.

“We only recently decided to take on this challenge, so fund raising has only just begun. Given the shorter time scale we don’t anticipate raising as much, but we would love to be able to raise over £4,000.

“The 400 miles from Paris to Geneva was tough, especially given the heat wave we were cycling in. Some days were over 40 degrees and dehydration effected us all. We shouldn’t have to worry about that too much this time, but the distance will incredibly challenging and will require a lot more training.”
