DENBIGH will take part in Wales in Bloom for the first time this summer.

Gardening volunteer group Denbigh in Bloom, who led the town’s effort in the RHS It’s Your Neighbourhood flower competition last year, has already subscribed help from six schools, Denbigh Rotary, sixth formers at Ysgol Brondyffryn, Vale of Clwyd Mind and police cadets with the hope of building a community effort and making Denbigh residents “proud” of their town.

The Wales in Bloom judges will inspect Denbigh’s streetside floral displays starting at Crown Square, travelling along the High Street, Bridge Street, up Broomhill Lane to Temple Bar Gardens, down Vale Street, along Rhyl Road to the roundabouts, down the bypass and onto Ruthin Road and Trewen entrance before making their way back up Vale Street to finish on Crown Square.

Denbigh in Bloom is calling on residents on the streets to take part in decorating their property frontage with flora, while ensuring it is tidy with no weeds and litter – in order to avoid a losing points.

Lyndsey Tasker, chair of Denbigh in Bloom, said the competition could boost Denbigh’s economy by putting it on the “horticultural map” and attracting more visitors to see its “incredible history”.

“This really will be whole community effort,” she said.

“Most importantly our hope is that we make people in Denbigh proud. The competition and judging is secondary to that; as long as people walk around their town and think it look's beautiful then we are happy.

“The campaign itself is a massive undertaking for volunteers, but we really want to put Denbigh on the horticultural map. We have so much incredible history in Denbigh, which people travel from all over to see and hear.

“It would be tremendous to draw in crowds who follow successful Bloom villages, towns and cities. The potential for the Denbigh economy is immense.”

Denbigh is entered into the ‘Town’ category and will compete against other North Wales towns such as Abergavenny and Holywell.

Ms Tasker added: “Denbigh has never been entered into this competition before so it's very exciting and hugely important for us to do well.

“We want to show how much volunteers have done over the last few years and what potential is available for us to achieve over the forthcoming years.

“Wales in Bloom is an extremely prestigious and high-profile event and one that can propel a town into further worldwide competitions.”

The judges will visit Denbigh

in July.
