CHILDREN at Ysgol Eifion Wyn, Porthmadog, have led on a Tidy Towns dog fouling awareness campaign in the town.

As part of the campaign the children designed a colourful poster which has since been transferred onto hardback signs and placed around the town.

Before creating their colourful poster the children discussed their intentions with Jonathan Gwyn Neale, Gwynedd Council’s Tidy Towns officer. Following their poster campaign the town’s county councillors came to the school with Joanthan Neale to thank the children for all their hard work.

Cllr Nia Wyn Jeffreys, said: “It’s fantastic to see the children’s efforts to help with the campaign to raise awareness of this revolting problem in our communities.

“It’s our children who are most vulnerable to the toxin found in dog faeces, and it’s therefore completely appropriate that it is they who are leading on this.”

Cllr Selwyn Griffiths, who also represents Porthmadog, said: “Working with schoolchildren is a wonderful Investment in our communities into the future, and especially as the crew at the school are so enthusiastic and keen to make a difference. Congratulations to all at the school in their successful partnership with Tidy Towns on this.”

Many dogs are infected with parasites which can be harmful to people, especially children. Toxocariasis is a disease caused when the eggs of toxocara worms are transferred from dogs to people through infected dog mess or soil. Infection can lead to illness and even blindness.
