THE REOPENING of a road that has been closed due to the sudden emergence of a huge sinkhole has been delayed.

Welsh Water had said that Boundary Lane in Saltney is due to reopen on Wednesday, but now says plans for the reopening have been delayed until at least Friday.

The road has been closed since the weekend for emergency repairs to the road.

A spokesman said: "As a result of bursts on our sewer network, we have been carrying out emergency repair work on Boundary Lane, Saltney, which has required closure of the road.

“Due to unforeseen circumstances, and the challenging nature of this work and the need to maintain the safety of our workers and motorists, the opening of the road has been delayed.

"We will be working on reinstating the road throughout this week – with an aim to reopen the road at the junction with Green Lane on Friday, with the site of the second burst on Boundary Lane to be fully reinstated next week.

“We would like to apologise for the disruption this may have caused and thank local residents and motorists for bearing with us while we carried out this necessary work.”

An earlier statement said: "We are currently carrying out emergency repair work on our sewer network on Boundary Lane, Saltney following two bursts there. Our contractors have been working in extremely challenging weather conditions to carry out the work.

"The team have completed one of the repairs and are currently working on the second. So that our contractors can work safely and for the safety of motorists, part of Boundary Lane is closed to traffic and local diversions are in place.

"We hope to be able to temporarily reinstate the road tomorrow and re-open it fully on Wednesday. While we carry out this work it will not have any impact on customers' wastewater services.

"We would like to apologise for the disruption this many cause and thank local residents and motorists for bearing with us."
