ANOTHER sublime season of sumptuous and spellbinding classical music will come to an end in Rhyl next week.

Marking the end of another successful season of the International Concert Series 2018/19, Rhyl Music Club will welcome the third in a trilogy of Beethoven concerts for its final showcase at Rhyl Town Hall on Wednesday, March 20.

The event will feature the acclaimed Welsh composer Hilary Tann, who will premiere her work 'First Light' which was commissioned by the club to raise awareness of the contribution women make throughout the classical musical world.

Hilary lives and works in the USA,but is making the visit to Rhyl especially for the occasion.

Praised for its lyricism and formal balance, her music is influenced by a strong identification with the natural world. These two interests combine in her enjoyment of haiku and in text selections from Welsh poets.

A deep interest in the traditional music of Japan has led to private study of the shakuhachi and guest visits to Japan, Korea, and China.

She will give a talk about her work at 6.30pm before the concert proper, to be given by the outstanding North Wales duo Mary Hofman, violin and Richard Ormrod, piano.

Tann said: “Wales is a land of music lovers where amateur groups abound and where professionals sing and play to discerning audiences. It seems to me that the Beethoven in Wales project is born of these two streams and I am delighted to be writing for this distinguished duo”

The first performance performance of Tann's work is a fitting climax for this latest season, which has seen other firsts including premieres from Rhian Samuel and Sarah Lianne Lewis as well as cinematic accompaniment for a concert celebrating music for the silent screen.

Concert organiser Stephen Leeder said; "I am pleased with the response to what some see as the club stepping outside its traditional comfort zone into other areas of music, and we are already lining up jazz and drama related themes for next season."

However, while this year's season has broken new ground, Rhyl Music Club has stayed true to its roots, regaled music lovers with up-and-coming talents alongside some more established soloists and groups.

Mr Leeder added: "An important aspect of the club is its promotion of young musicians from our surrounding area.

"This season had two special events, starting with the Christmas concert when Caernarfon based Ynyr Pritchard accompanied the Welsh Chamber Orchestra in a viola concerto.

"Then our outstanding youth concert was a full recital by club member Ellis Thomas who is in his final year at Ysgol John Bright and will study music at University next year.

"Ellis performed for us shortly after being awarded first prize in the Rotary International competition. Since his recital he has gained second place in the UK Intercollegiate Beethoven competition and we anticipate an interesting future career for him.”
