THERE was some flippin' good fun during Ruthin's annual pancake races.

The Shrove Tuesday event took place around St Peter's square. All proceeds raised will go to St Kentigern Hospice in St Asaph.

Armed with frying pans were children from Ysgol Borthyn, Rhos Street School and Ysgol Pen Barras. There was also fierce competition as adults took their crepes for a run.

Rev Stuart Evans, warden of St Peter's Church, said: "We had a really good crowd this year, a lot of parents and grandparents turned out to watch.

"It is a joy to have that engagement with the young people in the town.

"We had at least two heats for the adults."

Next year will be the 40th anniversary of the race.

Rev Evans added: "Some local businesses are so small that they don't have a member of staff to take part, so we had plenty of donations this year."

Elizabeth Smart, of the race committee, said: "The committee start planning at the beginning of January.

"It was a wonderful turn out, terrific.

"We have a race for each year group for the school - the tiny tinies and then year one to six plus adults.

"Everyone flipped their pancakes really well."

The event was organised by Ruthin Town Churches.
