FITNESS enthusiasts in Rhyl, Prestatyn and St Asaph will row 'round the world' for charity this month.

Throughout February, Denbighshire Leisure will be hosting a series of events including treadmill challenges, 15 hour 'spinathons' and a 40,075km 'rowathon' to help raise money for The British Heart Foundation (BHF).

On Friday, February 1, the first steps were taken for a seven day 42km marathon treadmill challenge at Denbighshire Leisure sites including Rhyl Leisure Centre and the Nova in Prestatyn, St. Asaph, Ruthin, Denbigh and Llangollen.

Cllr Bobby Feeley, Denbighshire County Council’s lead member for Well-being and Independence, said: “We are pleased to be hosting these fundraising events in aid of BHF Cymru’s life saving research, which will help make a difference to the lives of those fighting a daily battle with heart conditions.

“Keeping active is a great way to stay healthy and our leisure centres offer residents a range of classes and activities to help them keep fit."

To help raise the funds, Rhyl Leisure centre will hold BHF themed 'step' classes on Saturday 9 and a 'spinathon' on Sunday 10 aiming for 15 hours on non-stop cycling as well as a Junior Spinathon on Monday 25 and a master group cycle class on Thursday 14.

Gyms will also offer full body screenings and health checks from Monday 18 until Sunday 24, which will also include information from the BHF.

There are currently about 4,800 people in Denbighshire fighting a daily battle with heart and circulatory disease.

Cheryl Lockyer, BHF Cymru Fundraising Manager for North Wales, said: “We’re incredibly grateful to Denbighshire Leisure for their support.

“February promises to be a great month of events and the money raised helps fund ground-breaking discoveries and identify new treatments that could help save more people from the devastating effects of heart disease.”

The various events are open to both members and the public, with donations recommended and all proceeds going to the BHF.
