A RESIDENT from near Overton has called on drivers to take their litter home or recycle it after she and her husband collected bags of rubbish on the roads around the area.

Wendy Lunt and her husband Edward carry out litter picks around the lanes near Overton and Penley and say they have picked up 20 bags of rubbish since Christmas.

But she believes the problem would not be so bad if commuters took responsibility for their own rubbish when driving, taking it home to be recycled or use bins provided.

“The litter that is thrown out off cars is well out of control,” said Mrs Lunt.

“I litter pick the country lanes near to Penley and Overton. Over the last year we have picked up a hundred full bags of disgusting litter and since Christmas we have picked up 20 bags of litter.

“This has got to stop – it is toxic waste polluting the land and waterways and it is everywhere. It looks disgusting, it is disgusting. There is absolutely no reason for people to throw litter.

“They can carry it full so there is no reason why they can carry it empty to put in their recycle bins. More has to be done if we did not clear this mess you would not be able to get down the lanes for litter.

“Every shop should have the warning of the litter problem – it does carry a fine of £75. They are selling the items that cause the litter and the planet is dying because of this waste being carelessly discarded.”

Mrs Lunt added she believes more can be done to get the message across for people to be made aware of the issues litter causes, including radio adverts and educating youngsters.
