A group of compassionate students from Rhyl College collected a range of coffee and tea-related items in support of a local charity which helps vulnerable people within the area.

Fifteen Heath & Care Level 2 students spent weeks putting together a giant hamper in support of Reach:Out charity’s ‘Bring a Brew to Work’ initiative, before dropping it off at the Prestatyn Astrobowl in time for the charity’s Christmas community dinners – which were served in baps, followed by mince pies! Student donations included tea, coffee, biscuits, cakes and sugar.

The charity is spearheaded by 21-year-old Sally Harland, an ex-Prestatyn High School pupil who is currently studying at the University of Liverpool.

The students’ tutor, Hailey Hockenhull, said: “Students wanted to support a local charity at Christmas and we were really impressed with the way they wholeheartedly got behind this cause. It was especially worthwhile, as these items are often neglected by charitable donors.”

The Christmas dinners were aimed at local people who are using a foodbank, find themselves sofa surfing/homeless, or are maybe just socially isolated and want to make new friends. The attendees were also given a range of donated Christmas presents.

Sally previously organised a sleep-out in Rhyl for homelessness charity Centrepoint, where 35 volunteers - armed with just a sleeping bag and a cardboard box - raised awareness of the numbers sleeping rough within the area.

Sally’s new year message on the charity’s Facebook page reads: “It's overwhelming how much support a 21-year-old woman has got from you all. The power that lies in all our hands to make a difference in 2019 has never felt so reachable.”
