CHARGES will be introduced in the New Year at two car parks in Prestatyn.

Following a consultation with Denbighshire County Council, the town council have decided to amend the free parking offer at Central (Ty Nant) car park and Fern Avenue from January 1 2019.

Free parking will be available for up to four hours at both car parks, but motorists wishing to park for longer than four hours will be required to purchase an all-day parking ticket costing £3.50.

A spokesperson from Prestatyn Town Council said: “The town council has subsidised the cost of parking in Central (Ty Nant) car park and Fern Avenue since 2015, making parking free for the public to use in order to encourage shoppers to visit Prestatyn High Street.

“Alongside Denbighshire County Council, we have monitored usage of the car park and it is apparent that many vehicles are left parked all day in the car park, which means it can often be difficult for shoppers to find a parking space especially if they arrive later in the day. The re-location of Prestatyn Iach Health Centre has also impacted on parking availability.

“All-day tickets at £3.50 is the same price as in other Denbighshire long stay car parks.”

Cllr Andrea Tomlin, of East ward, said: “This change has come about as the central car park, which has always been intended primarily as a ‘shoppers car park’, had become anything but of late. This change is needed to return it to this by ensuring a turn around of available car parking spaces throughout the day to facilitate shoppers being able to park up for free and gain easy access to our vibrant Town Centre’s fabulous offerings.

“As a town we are proud of the amount of free car parking available throughout the town which we feel sets us apart from other towns”.

Steve Fenner, resident and one of the directors of Artisans Collective CIC in Prestatyn, said: “I would like to have seen it [the charge after four hours] better advertised from the town council and giving at least a months notice.”
