A SEASIDE town has lit up with the magic of Christmas - with the help of a pop star.

Rhyl shimmered and sparkled as former X-Factor winner and star guest Shayne Ward performed to a packed Rhyl high street, took pictures with fans and turned on the Christmas lights.

Ward was joined by mayor of Rhyl Mayor Cllr Win Mullen-James to start the town's festive celebrations by switching on the lights and starting the night's firework display.

The day's entertainment began on the high street at around 2.00pm and saw the cast of Rhyl Pavilion’s seasonal pantomime Aladdin bring smiles to the crowd, alongside costumed street performers and stilt walkers.

A number of music artists also contributed to the entertainment, including local pop duo Sky Light Aura, female vocalist Bethan Tomkins and Serenity Royal.

As the sun set the lights were switched on at around 4pm and the proceedings were finished with a short firework finale.

The event was organised by Denbighshire County Council and supported by Rhyl Town Council.

Councillor Hugh Evans OBE, Leader of Denbighshire County Council said: “Once again Rhyl’s Christmas lights switch-on was a brilliant festive event for the whole family.

“Families enjoyed the atmosphere and got into the Christmas spirit. It showcased the fantastic range of shops in the town centre and gave the chance to see what Rhyl has to offer.”
