CAMPAIGNERS wanting to save the library in Welshpool have created a song called ‘Leave OUR Library Alone’ to help fight their cause.

The song was uploaded on YouTube alongside a slideshow of photographs on Wednesday, November 14.

Brian Timmis, who created the paper petition of the same name, which now has over 3,100 signatures, made the song with Sonya Smith. They wrote and recorded the song in Brian's kitchen in just two and a half hours.

He said that Sonya was the perfect person to sing the song as she's "very well-known in Welshpool" and has been a local campaigner for years.

The lyrics in the chorus say “leave our, leave our, leave our, library alone”.

Brian said: "The song is repetitive because because we wanted to keep the chorus as an earworm in people's heads."

"It's not a song for people to listen to, it's a song to march to," he said.

One verse of the song says: “It’s a library, a community space, a helping hand, a smiling face.

"Books, computers, groups and art. Every age, why tear us apart?”

Another line in the song says: “Our library is loved and used.

“Don’t destroy it, you’ve no excuse.”

A consultation into Powys County Council's plans to merge Welshpool Library with the Powysland Museum will come to an end this Sunday, November 25.
