A SMALL primary school has pulled off a David versus Golaith feat after winning at a national competition on live television.

Ysgol Llannefydd, which caters for 27 junior school pupils, has won a first and second place award at the Gwyl Cerdd Dant, a celebration of traditional Cymraeg music in which poems are recited and sung to a harp, in Blaenau Ffestiniog on November 10.

The school’s gold award was received in the Cerdd Dant song category in which the school performed ‘Chwyrnu’ up against 20 other schools, and the silver was received in the text recital category for the school’s reading of ‘Byddin y Brwsh Us Llawr’.

Half of the Llannefydd pupils from year three to year six took part and were led by Foundation stage teacher Gwawr Davies, Sioned Jones and accompanist Mair Beech Williams.

The performances were broadcasted live in S4C at 12.35pm and 2pm.

Gari Evans, headteacher at Ysgol Llannefydd, said: “This is an experience the children will never forget.

“The Cerdd Dant moves to a different location every year so this was a brilliant opportunity for them to take part whilst it was up north.

“It is the taking part that counts – we prepared the children to be competitive but there was no expectation for them to achieve such great results.

“The judge told us that we received the awards because the pupils sang well in harmony and delivered the recital with clarity.”

Nia Clwyd Roberts mother of year three pupil Anni, who took part in the performances, said: “We are very proud of their achievements.

“We're grateful to the teachers for giving the children such wonderful experiences.”
