Region comes together to mark centenary of Armistice

This Sunday, November 11 is the 100th anniversary of the conclusion of the Great War and a whole host of events and services are planned to mark the momentous occasion.

BALA

A BILINGUAL service will open the Remembrance commemorations in Bala on Sunday morning.

The Rev Carwyn Siddall will lead the service in Capel yr Annibynwyr at 10am.

After the service, a procession to the town's war memorial will take place ahead of 11am.

CORWEN

A FULL weekend of Remembrance is scheduled in Corwen,

During Saturday daytime, there will be a First World War photographic exhibition on The Square and a collection for the British Legion, in addition to an exhibition at Corwen Museum.

A bit later, at around 4.30pm, a candelit vigil is scheduled, with poems and readings at the War Memorial Park gates.

Turning to Sunday, November 11, and commemorations begin at 10am, when a service will be conducted in the Church of St Mael and St Sulian.

This will be followed by an assembly at Corwen sports pavilion.

Here, there will be the laying of wreaths and the reading of names of the remembered at the War Memorial Park gates.

A minute's silence and the playing of the Last Post on the bugle will be poignantly observed at 11am.

Then, at midday, a welcome will be on offer at Corwen Museum for an exhibition, plus tea and cake.

The weekend of Remembrance comes to a close at 6pm on Sunday.

After congregating at Corwen Leisure Centre, there will be a torch-lit walk up Caer Drewyn for a "Beam of Light" event at 6.55pm.

DENBIGH

A WHOLE host of Remembrance events are also planned in Denbigh.

On Sunday, November 11, a 15-minute service will be conducted at St Mary's Church from 10am.

This will be followed by a parade up to the cenotaph, on Crown Square.

A First World War exhibition will be held downstairs at Denbigh Town Hall on Saturday, Sunday and Monday.

This free event, with tea and coffee available, will run between 10am and 2pm on each of the three days.

LLANGOLLEN

A FESTIVAL of Remembrance is scheduled in Llangollen this weekend.

The festival will be held at Llangollen Town Hall this Saturday evening, November 10 (6.30pm).

This will be an evening of entertainment and remembrance featuring Llangollen Youth Choir, Llangollen Silver Band and Equapoise Theatre, performing 'A Tribute to Hedd Wyn'.

Tickets are £6, with concessions at £5, which includes refreshments.

They are available from Courtyard Books, Wingetts and Lily Rose Interiors, or on the evening from the box office.

On Sunday morning, the annual service of Remembrance around Llangollen war memorial will be conducted.

This will take place in the new Centenary Square, which was named to commemorate the centenary of the end of the First World War.

RUTHIN

REMEMBRANCE events in Ruthin commenced on October 11, when the last soldier from the town was killed.

The Fallen Trail, from Ruthin Craft Centre, continues until November 11, as does The Fallen Exhibition at St Peter's Church.

The trail throughout the town has details of the 101 names of those killed being posted in the vicinity of where they lived.

This has been set up by deputy mayor Cllr Gavin Harris.

In addition to the exhibition, there is also a mock-up trench and 'reflection' areas for people to sit and reflect. A commemoration evening was held on October 12 when the names of the 101 Ruthin men killed during the First World War were projected on to the church wall and the bell was tolled for each soldier.

Julian Williams, who is in charge of poppy collection for Royal British Legion locally, has made and installed many figures / images throughout town of soldiers and other figures relating to the Great War.

This Sunday, November 11 will be marked by Ruthin's Remembrance Sunday ceremony.

Attended by civic dignitaries, ex-service personnel, the Royal British Legion, youth organisations, and community groups and organisations, the Remembrance event will take place at Ruthin War Memorial from 10.30am.

All of these activities have been achieved by three groups working together - Ruthin Town Council, Cytun and the Royal British Legion.

ST ASAPH

A CITY is coming together to remember the fallen this weekend.

A Remembrance Sunday service will be held at St Asaph Cathedral at 9.45am this Sunday, November 11.

This service will then be followed by a wreath-laying ceremony at St Asaph cenotaph.
