A WEEPING window to be made up of hundreds of shimmering poppies is to go on display at St Asaph Cathedral.

The unique creation - to mark the 100 year anniversary of the end of the First World War - will be made from plastic; school children are being tasked to make the flowers from plastic bottles. Anything not used will be recycled.

Schools involved in the creative project include St Asaph VP Infant School, Ysgol Esgob Morgan and Fairholme Primary School.

Individuals can also take part.

Marion Hughes, of St Asaph Parish Church, said: "I had been shown how to make other flowers from plastic bottles and adapted the idea when the dean said he would love a weeping window of poppies in the cathedral. The penny dropped, so to speak.

"We are inviting people to honour the memory of a friend or relative killed in combat by making their own poppy.

"We are hosting an opportunity next Tuesday (October 30). There will be help on hand to make the poppies."

The event will run between 10am and 5.30pm and there will be help on hand to make the flowers.

People are asked to bring an empty and clean plastic bottle with a rounded shoulder for each poppy they want to make. Other materials will be provided.

Marion added: "In terms of recycling, we will use the lower third of some of the bottles to make lanterns to take out on Halloween at our messy church holiday club. The rest will go into plastic recycling aside from the PVC glitter which is not recyclable."

An open afternoon, to view the finished artwork - to be displayed in the tower section of the cathedral - will be held on Sunday, November 4 between 1pm and 3pm. On this day there will also be a last minute chance to make a poppy.
