Kinmel Bay has received life saving equipment spurred by the death of a young Rhyl gym enthusiast.

The life saving equipment, donated by the Sam Standerwick Memorial Fund, has been installed outside Y Morfa Leisure Centre, on Cader Avenue, adjacent to Ysgol Y Foryd and Ysgol Maes Owen

The town's second defibrillator, in addition to one at the council offices, presented by Adrian Standerwick on behalf of his 25 year old son, a keen gym-goer from Llandullas, who trained at DL Fitness in Rhyl and died in 2016 from an undetected heart condition.

Bill Darwin, chair of Kinmel Bay and Towyn Sports Association, said: "This is a definite life saver for the community and we are so happy to be able to offer any time access to the schools and residents.

“We wish to thank Sam's father Adrian Standerwick and family for their donation at such a sad time in their lives, the Town Council for their help in purchasing the cabinet and the Rhyl and Prestatyn Community First Responders for their advice and help in setting the defibrillator up and registering it with the ambulance service.”

The defibrillator is registered with The North Wales Ambulance Service, who can provide a code for the cabinet outside of the leisure centres opening hours, allowing 24 hour access to the kit.

Town Councillor Barry Griffiths said: "Through this process I have been made aware of the need for much wider availability and training on defibrillator as well as screening programs for early detection."
