IT WAS shopping trolleys at the ready this morning as eager residents gathered for the opening of a town’s new supermarket.

German discount chain Lidl, on Parc Dyffryn in Prestatyn, opened its doors on Thursday, September 27.

About 30 people lined up for the store’s ribbon-cutting ceremony at 8am. Customers were given the chance to sample products and take advantage of celebratory offers.

First in the queue was Roy Hughes, of Prestatyn.

The 75-year-old, who lives about 10 minutes away, said: “It was a good atmosphere.

“I was the first customer in the queue. I got there at 6.55am, so I was a bit early. When they realised, they gave me a hot mug of coffee. I had to stand there for an hour - but they were brilliant, they didn’t say I had to go.

“It is perfectly placed in the town."

"I only live down the road but I did come by car though this shop is perfect for people coming by bus."

The new supermarket forms part of the company’s ongoing expansion and regeneration plans in the UK. It has created about 40 jobs.

The opening was attended by cllr Anton Sampson, mayor of Prestatyn, and Dennis Bone, Prestatyn town crier.

Shopper Shirley Delhees attended with her daughter Hayley MacDonald.

She said: “I love it. It’s a lot bigger and better for disabled people because there’s more room and there’s more variety compared to other supermarkets”.
