A TEENAGER from Rhyl has been selected to sing at BBC Wales’ Proms in the Park after receiving 2,000 votes.

Bethan Tomkins, 17, was chosen by ballot on social media to appear at the popular event, which returns to Colwyn Bay on Saturday.

The former Prestatyn High School pupil has spent her life hitting the high notes.

She took part in TeenStar – a nationwide singing and dance competition for teenagers and pre-teens – when she was 12.

She will have a 20-minute slot at the event, which is being headlined by mezzo-soprano Katherine Jenkins and West End star and Holby City actor Lee Mead.

Bethan, who is studying a performance arts course at Yale College in Wrexham, is currently putting her song choices forward for the BBC to consider.

Songs submitted include Adele’s When We Were Young; Don’t Look Back in Anger (Oasis); How Great Thou Art (Carrie Underwood) and Happy (Pharrell Williams).

Her mum, Marianne Tompkins, who will accompany her backstage, said: “She was tagged in a post on Events Conwy for community performance slots at BBC Proms in the Park Colwyn Bay.

“Loads of people had put themselves forward for a slot and she got down to the last three, which then went to a vote.

“We found out the result when we were on holiday in Greece.

“She has been putting her songs forward to the BBC. She is also considering Run by Leona Lewis and Ella Henderson’s cover of Believe.

“There is a degree of flexibility. She wants to put forward songs that show variation of her voice.”

Marianne added: “She has been singing for such a long time. I am massively proud of her.

“She has suffered with massive confidence issues in the past, but she grabbed this and went for it herself.

“She is always singing and rehearing.

“She wants to do this professionally in the future, so it is wonderful on her CV – it all helps.”

Other performers will include 16-year-old pianist Lauren Zhang – the winner of BBC Young Musician 2018 – and Only Kids Aloud.

The event will be held at Stadiwm ZipWorld, Eirias Park.

All of these acts will perform alongside the BBC National Orchestra and Chorus of Wales.

Tickets for the event are on sale and available from Venue Cymru, Llandudno.
