A TROPHY commemorating a former Welsh tennis international and professional coach has been awarded for the first time.

The Andy Browning Trophy was presented to Owen Mitchell of Wrexham after his victory in an under-14s competition at Prestatyn Tennis Club.

Former Prestatyn club member Mr Browning died last May, aged 63, his body having been found on Ffrith beach.

A spokesman for Prestatyn Tennis Club said: "The highlight of the competition was the presentation of the brand new cup, the Andy Browning trophy, to the winner.

"Andy was born and bred in Rhyl and was a talented sportsman, excelling in tennis, and was well known in the area before he sadly passed away last year.

"His friends bought the trophy in his memory."

Ross Browning, the late tennis ace's brother, presented the trophy to the winner and also a plaque to the competition's runner-up, Iwan Burt-Smith, from Scotland.
