A POPULAR pub chain could be a step closer to making it's way into Conwy.

The North Wales Pioneer believe Wetherspoons are involved in talks with the Conwy County Borough Council (CCBC) to bring a store to the Civic Hall site.

CCBC cabinet member for Economic Development, Louise Emery, said a meeting was being held next month to discuss options for the Civic Hall.

While cllr Emery was unable to confirm or deny whether Wetherspoons had put a bid forward, she said a number of options had been put forward for next months meeting to consider.

A CCBC spokesperson said: "The Council is currently undertaking its due diligence before members conclude the current confidential disposal process.

"Until this process is complete the Council cannot make any comment on any specific bid or enquiry."

The Pioneer contacted Wetherspoons for comment and spokesman Eddie Gershon said that the company would not comment on the story.

The Grade II listed building, in the heart of Conwy, has been on the open market since April and CCBC reported having received no bids in up until October last year.

No bids were received following a competitive tendering process which began on July 14, 2015 and concluded after a number of stages on January 16, 2017.

Wetherspoons have been linked with the Civic Hall site for a number of years while a number of community groups have attempted to prevent the move, considering putting their own bids forward.

However to date, the Civic Hall still remains, housing the Conwy library - which was last year the only library in Wales to pass every standard test, something run by the Welsh Government.

But next month may see a concrete proposal for the Civic Hall put in place.
