Tributes have been paid to a former Colwyn Bay Mayor following his death.

Councillor John Davies died unexpectedly on Saturday at the age of 69.

His wife Ann Davies led the tributes to her husband describing his as a friend to all and someone who will be sorely missed.

She said: "He will simply be remembered as just John Davies from Rhos-on-Sea. He knew everybody and everybody knew him."

Mr Davies lived in Rhos-on-Sea his whole life and his wife said it was for this reason he was so proud to be Bay of Colwyn councillor of the Dinarth Ward.

His biography on the town council showed how devoted he was to the role saying he was keen to ensure residents had the best service possible from both councils and was not afraid to speak up and “wave the flag” for Rhos.

In 2016/17 he became mayor which Mrs Davies said was one of her husbands biggest achievements in his long career as a part of the Bay of Colwyn Town Council.

She said: "He was very very good at the role. He was able to meet so many people and was very good at going to so many different things, even if they were outside his area."

During his time as mayor Mr Davies was able to raise £2000 for Ty Gobaith and the Wales Air Ambulance, who were his chosen charities.

Current Colwyn Bay Mayor Jeff Pearson, worked under Mr Davies as his deputy last year and said he was a great councillor and well respected by everyone.

He said: "We were friends as well as on the council together. He would always be there before council meetings, he will be really missed. I am stunned.

"He has been through it this year but he has carried on, he never let anything get to him down."

The pair had worked together for six years and cllr Pearson said the news had come as a big shock and Mr Davies would be sadly missed.

He leaves behind two children - Gareth and Nia, and two grandchildren.

Mr Davies worked all his life for Colwyn Borough Council and Conwy County Borough Council. before retiring at the age of 60.

Both he and Mrs Davies were active members of Rhos-on-Sea Methodist Church where Ann is Minister’s

Secretary and John was Senior Church Steward.

In the past John has served as a trustee of a mental health charity, and was a board member of North Wales Housing Association for 14 years.

Another former Colwyn Bay Mayor, Dr Sibani Roy, added: "I am shocked and numb with the sad news of sudden passing away of Cllr John Davies.

"Late Cllr John Davies was my deputy Mayor in the year 2015-16 and the Mayor in 2016-17 at the Colwyn Bay Town Council.

"We got on well, he and his wife Ann Davies were very supportive during my Mayoral year.

"John was a committed Christian, a devoted husband, a loving parent and grand parent and a dutiful Councillor/Mayor to the community. My heartfelt condolences to his widow and the bereaved family.

"May his soul rest in peace."

A date for the funeral is yet to be set.
