AN INVESTIGATION is under way after a fire broke out at a chalet during the early hours of Wednesday morning.

The fire, which completely gutted most of the wooden structure, happened on Berwyn Road in Llangollen.

North Wales Fire and Rescue Service were called to the incident shortly after midnight and crews from Llangollen and Chirk arrived at the scene.

The chalet is situated next door to and slightly behind the White Waters Hotel and is thought to be owned by the owners of a nearby house.

The hotel’s owner Dave McKeown, who was working at the site as part of the clean up operation yesterday, said the fire was a complete mystery.

“I got up this morning and saw what had happened. It was hard to believe as no one seemed to know anything about it,” he said.

“A family who live nearby own the property but it has been unoccupied for a while.”

Police were also at the scene on Wednesday morning and the cause of the fire is still under investigation, according to a fire service spokesman.

A police spokesman said: “Shortly after 12.16am this morning, Wednesday, October 15, emergency services were called to reports of a log cabin on fire at Berwyn, near Llangollen.

“North Wales Fire and Rescue Service were quickly on the scene and able to extinguish the fire.

“The log cabin was unoccupied and no one was injured during the incident.”

Det Sgt Haydn Williams at St Asaph CID said “North Wales Police are conducting a joint investigation with the North Wales Fire and Rescue Service to establish the cause of the fire.

“As part of that investigation I am appealing to anyone who was in the area at the time and may have seen any suspicious persons or activity, or indeed knows anything about the fire to contact Police immediately."

If anyone has any information about the fire, North Wales Police can be contacted on 101 or anonymously via Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111. The crime reference number is R162484.
