KINMEL Bay FC made history on Saturday (April 27) by winning their first Cookson Cup in a thrilling 1-0 victory against Llandudno Junction.

Held at Denbigh Town’s stadium, the game remained goalless until the second half, by which time Llandudno Junction had lost their goalkeeper, Tomos Evans, to injury.

The goal came after Kinmel Bay shifted the ball from right to left, before Connor Morris unleashed an effort that hit the crossbar.

The ball was recycled by Nyal Hughes, who found Patrick Hamid, who fired across the goal, only for the ball to hit the upright.

But it was Oli Gray who reacted first, as he cut back inside before unleashing a 20-yard strike that left Llandudno Junction keeper Stephen O’Neil rooted to the spot.

Gray celebrated with a backflip to send Bay fans into ecstasy.

Llandudno Junction were awarded a late penalty when, in the 83rd penalty, Dean Seager was brought down by Daniel Wickerson in the penalty box.

Up stepped Matt Jones, who hadn’t missed a penalty all season, only for Danny Mills to dive correctly to his left and save it.

The final whistle blew after nine minutes of injury team, and Kinmel Bay’s coaches and fans ran on to the pitch to celebrate with their players,

A club statement following the game read: “As a club, we would like to thank everybody involved who makes Kinmel Bay a great family club.

“This includes all the spectators who came down to support, and to all our sponsors who make it possible for us to function every season, because without all of this, it wouldn't be possible.”
