BAILIFFS were called to Rhyl's Marina Quay retail park this week in order to remove a traveller encampment from the premises.

Campervans belonging to the traveller community had been set up at the site since Friday (May 3), despite the land being privately-owned.

Police are believed to have been involved at some point since their arrival, with the managing company made aware of the encampment.

Retail park management company Redpath Bruce said they had served a notice on Monday, giving the group 24 hours to vacate.

This was not done, and so the notice was enforced the next day.

At that time, bailiffs were told by the travellers that "no-one was fit to drive due to being over the drink drive limit".

They finally vacated the premises when the bailiffs returned with towing vehicles on Wednesday morning.

A Redpath Bruce spokesperson said: "The Bailiffs attended on Monday to serve notice to the travellers which gave them 24 hours notice to vacate.

"However, as they had not vacated, the Bailiffs returned on Tuesday to enforce the notice.

"While on site the Bailiffs engaged with the travellers who stated that no-one was fit to drive due to being over the drink/drive limit.

"Overnight security was arranged and the Bailiffs returned at 7am on Wednesday with towing vehicles.

"Thereafter, the Bailiffs reported that the travellers were making moves to leave site and they remained on site until the last vehicle had left."
