RHYL’s defensive frailties continued as they were heavily beaten 4-1 at Ruthin Town.

The Lilywhites were no match for their Huws Gray Alliance rivals in what were difficult conditions throughout, and Matthew Jones’ side will have a fortnight to put things right when they entertain Gresford Athletic on February 23.

The home side had the better of the opening exchanges and they went ahead on eight minutes when Will Owen fired past Rory Crowther from inside the area.

Midfielder Stewart Carroll almost got the Lilies back on level terms soon after when his effort was blocked by Ryan Goldston, and this proved to be crucial as Chris Williams’ men doubled their advantage on 24 minutes when the prolific Llyr Morris took advantage of some hesitant defending to fire home a second.

The lively James Murphy had the next opportunity for the away side but a last-ditch block from the Town defence saw the ball sail over the bar.

After the break saw a wild challenge from Murphy spark a melee in the centre of the pitch which saw the winger and Owen booked, but the hosts managed to pull further clear following the restart courtesy of another fine finish from the second tier’s top scorer Morris on 61 minutes.

The visitors missed another good opportunity immediately following the latest setback when Mark Connolly fired wide after good work by substitute Phil Marsh, while the latter also fluffed his lines was presented with a chance which was well saved by Goldston.

More poor defending was punished by livewire Morris, who secured his hat-trick from close range on 83 minutes to take his tally to 24 league goals this season.

Alun Webb finally managed to gain a consolation for Jones’ side on 88 minutes with a wonderful solo effort, which was all they had to show from a disappointing day at the office for the one-time promotion hopefuls.
