A REGIONAL women’s league has been suspended by the Football Association of Wales thanks to a dispute involving Rhyl Ladies.

The Lilies’ development squad are being refused entry to the North Wales Women’s Football League, due to the senior side’s involvement in the pyramid, which has been deemed “impractical” to chairman Bill Darwin.

Despite winning their dispute, the league failed to include the Development Squad in their fixtures resulting in a huge social media campaign which has played a part in the FAW taking over the league for the remainder of the season.

The argument stems from the fact that Rhyl would have two sides plying their trade in the Women’s Welsh Premier League should the newly formed team manage to achieve promotion.

Speaking to the BBC, Mr Darwin said: “It would create a clear conflict of interest and could lead to other Premier League teams trying to run developmental or reserve squads in the league.

“No male football league allows similar team setups and the ruling of the FAW may push some women's football organisations in North Wales to break away from the FAW.

"We may as well be part of a small association who are dedicated to the development of women than a larger one that does not give the correct development."

Manager Tom Jamieson, added: “It’s unbelievable to think that in 2018 we are still having to fight for women to play football.

“We are hoping to play an important role in bringing football and in turn its benefits to girls and ladies across Rhyl and its surrounding areas. We hope that our awareness will encourage even more girls and ladies to get involved with football.”
