RHYL suffered a blow to their fading Huws Gray Alliance title hopes as they were held 2-2 at home by Penrhyncoch.

The Lilywhites were twice pegged back to ensure both sides went home with a share of the spoils, and Matthew Jones’ side are now in fifth spot ahead of their trip to Ruthin Town on Saturday (2pm).

The home side began the game in positive fashion and almost went ahead on 15 minutes when James Murphy’s effort was save by Leigh Jenkins, and the stopper had to be at his best to deny Aaron Pomeyie soon after.

Pomeyie fired another effort over on 20 minutes after good work from Murphy and Jordan Barrow, while Phil Marsh also spurned a good opportunity after latching on to an Alun Webb cross.

They finally managed to break the deadlock on 42 minutes when Will Bell produced a fine header from a Murphy delivery to open the scoring just before the break.

After the interval saw the visitors grow more into the contest and they were rewarded on 49 minutes when a Cledan Davies free-kick evaded everyone and somehow found its way past Rory Crowther.

This provoked a strong response from the Lilies, with Sam Downey and Alex Tichiner both missing chances just after the hour mark, but they kept plugging away and got their noses in-front once again on 71 minutes when a Webb cross was diverted into the net by Murphy.

The Lilies managed to shoot themselves in the foot once again soon after when Sion Meredith prodded home from close range after the home side failed to clear their lines on 79 minutes.

Things got even worse soon after when Barrow was dismissed for a reckless tackle, and they were staring defeat in the face after conceding a penalty late on when Jamie Brewerton’s clumsy challenge resulted in the spot kick.

Crowther was at his brilliant best to deny Evans’ effort from 12 yards and seal a point for his side.
