RGC have provided further competition for places at the scrum-half position with the signing of Nick Butterworth.

The talented back arrives at the Principality Premiership side following a trophy-laden stint at Pwllheli, where he quickly established himself as one of the top players throughout the region thanks to a series of outstanding displays of consistency.

Butterworth became the face and leader of a Pwll’ side that has enjoyed an enormous amount of success in recent years, securing the WRU National League Division One North title in 2017 after pipping Nant Conwy to the crown in dramatic fashion.

Although they were unsuccessful in retaining the championship this time around, Butterworth managed to skipper his side to some silverware in the form of the North Wales Senior Cup, and he joined up with his new teammates this week as they officially began their gruelling pre-season training regime ahead of their third season in the top flight.

With senior squad mainstay Alex Schwartz leaving the club this summer to join Cornish Pirates, there is no set starter in the number nine shirt and Butterworth will fight it out with former Wales U18 international Efan Jones and Cameron Davies for the spot.

RGC head coach Mark Jones, said: “I am delighted to bring Nick into the squad, and I would like to thank both Pwllheli and coach Ian for their support as well.

“As with any pre-season it is an opportunity for players current and new to start afresh and push for the starting jersey come the first game, and the opportunity is there for them.”
