RGC closed out their Principality Premiership fixtures with a dramatic 35-31 win at Bargoed.

The Gogs turned in another fine display of attacking rugby to end another memorable season on a high, with big changes coming this summer due to the departures of the influential trio of Alex Schwartz, Jacob Botica and Tiaan Loots.

Their ninth victory in 15 contests secured Mark Jones’ one-time title challengers fourth place as a result of their efforts, and they are now firmly established as a force to be reckoned with in the top flight.

The visitors made a bright start and took a commanding lead early on when Schwartz and Dion Jones dotted over for tries in the opening exchanges, with Botica drilling both conversion attempts.

This was met by a pair of Bargoed scores despite being down to 14-men soon after, and things got even better for the hosts soon after when they crossed the white wash twice more give them the lead for the first time.

A physical encounter saw RGC claw their way back into the contest immediately following the restart when Tim Grey surged over, and the Gogs re-took the lead when Botica marked his last game with a superb individual try. The New Zealander also added both conversions to give them a four-point cushion.

The rampant away side were now displaying the sort of free-flowing rugby that has been the cornerstone of their success under Jones, and forward Mei Parry was the next to go over after impressive approach play from Dion Jones and Botica, who continued his fine afternoon by adding the extras.

More pressure from the hosts ensured a nervy end to proceedings when they touched down in the closing stages, but the Gogs’ held firm to secure the spoils from another thrilling clash.
