A STRONG start was unable to prevent Prestatyn Town from falling to a 3-0 defeat at Newtown.

The Seasiders missed a host of good chances in the opening stages and were made to pay by the ruthless Robins, and the relegated side close out their JD Welsh Premier League campaign with two home games this week against Aberystwyth Town (Tuesday) and coastal rivals Llandudno (Friday, 7.30pm).

Despite the eventual result it was the away side who started the better and missed a great chance when Ben Maher was sent through on goal, but his effort was saved by Dave Jones.

Next to go close was Zyaac Edwards, who forced another stop from Jones with a fierce long-range effort, while Macauley Taylor’s shot was blocked by Ryan Sears during a dominant spell.

The Robins gradually worked their way into the contest and Alex Fletcher should have done better with a chance presented to him by Craig Williams on 20 minutes, and Jay Denney also failed to hit the target just before the break.

After the interval saw Edwards reacted first to a poor kick from Jones, but his tame effort was blocked and the home side punished on 48 minutes when Ethan Jones continued his fine goalscoring form with a drive that went in off the post.

Zebb Edwards though he had levelled matters soon after when he turned in a Ross Stephens free-kick, but his effort was ruled out for offside and things got even worse for them on 57 minutes when Jones despatched his second of the afternoon to double their advantage.

The former Shrewsbury Town strike had a golden chance for his hat-trick after the Robins were given a penalty, but Carl Jones produced a smart stop to keep his side in the contest.

Chris Hughes’ side finally sealed their victory in the final moments when Kieran Mills-Evans headed in a free-kick to round off the scoring.
