PRESTATYN Town picked up their first JD Welsh Premier League point since November following a hard-fought 1-1 draw at in-form Aberystwyth Town.

The Seasiders took the lead in the first period and managed to hold on for a share off the spoils despite having a man sent off, and the basement dwellers will look to carry on their positive momentum on Sunday when they host Newtown at the Motion Finance Stadium (2.30pm).

Both sides missed chances in the opening stages of the contest, the best falling to Aber’s John Owen, but it was Gareth Wilson’s side that drew first blood on 21 minutes when Damien Ketley rounded off an impressive team move to finish from close range.

The same player almost doubled their advantage just before the break following a well-worked free-kick, but the forward was unable to find the net, and Louis Irvine also fluffed his lines from inside the area during a dominant spell from the visitors.

Town suffered a significant setback after the break when substitute Zyaac Edwards, who came on for injured midfielder Michael Parker, was shown a red card after reacting to abuse from the home crowd, although the referee had initially dismissed brother Noah amidst the confusion.

Nev Powell’s men grabbed the initiative thanks to their number superiority, and the double-substitution of Geoff Kellaway and Luke Borrelli proved to be too much for the away side to handle in the closing stages.

They finally relented to the home pressure on 77 minutes when Kellaway managed to convert after some impressive build-up play.

The hosts threw everything at the Seasiders’ rearguard after getting back on level terms, but they were unable to find a winner to ensure that both sides had something to show for their efforts.

The result leaves the struggling side at the foot of the standings and ten points adrift of safety.
