PRESTATYN Town suffered another dent to their JD Welsh Premier League survival chances as they fell to a 1-0 home defeat to Newtown.

The Seasiders put in a spirited display bit missed some cutting edge in the final third due to the unavailability of Michael Parker and Noah Edwards, and Gareth Wilson’s side go in search of a much-needed win against Barry Town United on Saturday (1pm).

Ben Maher went close to opening the scoring in the early stages when he headed over a Ross Stephens free-kick, and almost immediately the Robins took the lead when a poor header from skipper Dave Hayes fell at the feet of Tom Goodwin, who fired past Carl Jones on four minutes.

A scrappy first period brought little in the way of chances, with Damian Ketley and Stephens spurning the best chances of the half for the home side.

After the break saw Maher head straight into the arms of visiting custodian Jack Perry, and the young stopper had to be at his very best to keep out a Stephens free-kick from just outside the box soon after.

The away side posed a significant threat on the counter attack thanks to the pacey Ethan Jones, but it was the hosts that kept creating opportunities as Hayes almost made up for his earlier error as his goalbound header was hacked off the line on 70 minutes.

This proved to be the last major chance that Wilson’s side could muster against the resolute Robins back-line, and Chris Hughes men almost doubled their advantage in stoppage time when Jones’ effort was brilliantly diverted off the line by Maher.

Their 17th defeat in 25 top flight contests means that Town are now 11 points adrift of safety, although they do have a game in hand on third-from-bottom Aberystwyth Town.
