PRESTATYN Town closed out Phase One of the JD Welsh Premier League season with a 3-0 reverse at Newtown.

The Seasiders were dealt a further blow with the news that fellow strugglers Aberystwyth Town secured an impressive victory over Connah’s Quay Nomads, which means Neil Gibson’s side have plenty of work to do in order to avoid an instant return to the Huws Gray Alliance during the second half of the campaign.

The home side began the game in positive fashion and they got their noses in-front on 25 minutes when Jamie Reed diverted a cross past Town stopper Carl Jones, while Luke Boundford and Callum Roberts spurned opportunities to double their advantage just before the break.

After the interval saw Chris Hughes’ side completely dominate proceedings despite Zyaac Edwards coming close for the away side early on in the period, and added a second goal to their tally on 71 minutes found the net following an extended period of pressure on the visitors’ back-line.

A miserable day at the office for the relegation candidates was compounded when substitute Joe Kenton made an instant impact by striking the decisive third on 84 minutes to round off the scoring and secure three points for the in-form Robins.

Despite their best efforts, the strugglers were unable to net a consolation in the final exchanges and suffered their ninth consecutive loss in all competitions in what has been a difficult few months on the field for the club.

Town officials announced their second signing of the January transfer window last week as midfielder Warren Adam returned to the Town set-up following a spell with Lock Stock Welsh Alliance Division One leaders Conwy Borough, but did not feature in Saturday’s defeat.
