ST ASAPH Seconds started the season in fine style with a 93-run home victory over Pwllheli.

The city side made a superb start with the bat despite losing David Lloyd for nine early on, with fellow opener Ben Murphy producing a number of eye-catching strokes before eventually falling to a Joseph Harding delivery on 48.

Skipper Mark Dine also contributed to the overall score with a knock of 33, while Joe Lunn fell just one short of his half century when he was despatched by Kalim Al Baloshi soon after.

Mike Thompson did manage to achieve the milestone and finished the day unbeaten on 54 as the hosts set a target of 221-4 from their 40 overs.

Welsh youth international Owen Reilly was run out by Robert Jackson after making just four, and the Saints star also took the wickets of Rhys Griffiths (21), Joe James Clark (7) and Joseph Harding (0) to end an excellent eight over spell with figures of 3-36.

A brilliant innings from opening batsman Neil Williams ensured a nervy end to proceedings, but he was trapped lbw on 59 by Thompson (2-22) which proved to be the turning point.

No other Pwll player managed to make it into double figures as they ended on 128-7, and Dine’s side travel to Bethesda on Saturday in search of back-to-back victories to start the campaign.

The first unit are also back in action next weekend when they host Hawarden Park.
