THERE could hardly have been a more dramatic finish than at Beach Close where Prestatyn Cricket Club scrambled a leg-bye off the final ball to seal a five-wicket win over Wallasey in the Business Assistance Liverpool Competition Premier Division.
The Wirral side was invited to bat and their innings lasted a painstaking 62.5 overs before they were finally bowled out for 186, skipper John Pugh leading the way with 80.
Springbok speed merchant Mario Olivier returned the best figures of four for
38 off 15.5 overs while young left arm spinner Ben Williams nabbed four for 57 off 21.
In response, Prestatyn openers Gareth Boughey and skipper Morne Williams put on 50 for the first wicket before the former departed for 35.
Olivier posted 25, Gareth Van Heerden 14 and Haydn Williams 12, but all along Morne Williams was carrying his bat for the cause.
Needing 119 off the last 20 overs, the hosts kept scoring at a rate of a run a ball until they required five off the last three deliveries. Ali Taylor struck a boundary to tie the scores, but the next delivery was a dot ball so one was still needed.
Taylor and Williams managed to scamper through for a leg-bye off the last ball, leaving Prestatyn victorious on 187 for five. It was a true captain's innings from Williams who finished 84 not out, his team completing a 20-4 success. Chris Bourne scooped three for 82 for the visitors.
Prestatyn 2nds lost by six wickets at Huyton.
On a soaking wet strip, the visitors were bowled out for a moderate 128 off 38 overs, Darren Hughes hitting 37 and Andrew Harris 21.
Huyton then finished on 129 for four.
On Saturday Prestatyn's first team are home to Maghull.
