PRESTATYN hosted the only game to survive the weather in the Liverpool Competition Premier Division on Saturday - and their meeting with bottom side St Helens Recs could hardly have been more of a thriller.
At the end of a rain-restricted encounter both teams had scored 160 for seven, meaning a 6-6 point split which moved Prestatyn up a place to eighth.
The Welsh side will be kicking themselves, though, for missing out on a chance to beat the basement
boys as victory could have moved them up to sixth with a game in hand on their closest rivals. Put into bat in after a two-hour delay at Beach Close, Prestatyn dipped to eight for two before Danny Thomas (36) and Gareth Van Heerden (28) put on 53 for the third wicket.
Haydn Williams (38 not out) and Mario Olivier (28) added useful runs as the hosts declared on a moderate 160 for seven off 51 overs. New Zealander Tony Bullick picked up four for 44 for the visitors. Given just 29 overs to make 161, Recs made a real go of it. Bullick and Stuart Toole both posted 25 and going into the final over the basement boys needed just four to win.
Two were scored off young spinner Ben Williams' first ball, but four dot deliveries followed meaning Recs required two for victory off the last one. They could manage only a single, meaning St Helens too finished on 160 for seven, resulting in a 6-6 equal points split. Ben Williams produced excellent figures of four for 43 off 10 overs for the home team while Saints batsman Stuart Lyon recorded the top score of the match with 47 not out.
This Saturday Prestatyn travel to sixth-placed Hightown seeking to repeat their 56-run victory over the Liverpool side in May when Danny Thomas scored a ton.
