A MONTH-LONG celebration of squash will be bringing some of the sport’s top names to Colwyn Bay.

Le Sport Health and Fitness in Rhos on Sea will be hosting its Festival of Squash from December 18 until January 18, featuring a programme of events including two world ranking tournaments and coaching sessions for young players.

The festival kicks off with the Colwyn Classic events - two top tournaments giving local players a chance to face-off with the world’s best. The WSA Women’s event includes players from Egypt, India, USA, South Africa, Europe and the UK, whilst the men’s PSA Closed Satellite has some of the best youngsters from England and Wales competing.

The tournament is also being supported by Colwyn Bay Town Council, and one of those competing on her home turf is 18-year-old squash ace Emily Whitlock, who this year scooped the Conwy Sports Awards Senior Sports Woman Award.

Emily said: “It’s fantastic how the Bay of Colwyn Town Council have really got behind this event. Not only will we have some great squash and I will be able to play in front of my home crowd, but there is an opportunity for children and adults to have free coaching as part of the festival.

“It’s also amazing that the event is being live streamed over the internet so people all over the world will be able to watch us playing in Rhos on Sea!”

Admission to the Colwyn Classic is free, with qualifying matches starting at 4pm on Wednesday, December 19. The main draws of the events start on Thursday 20th at 4pm and then run through until the finals on Sunday afternoon.

Local school children are also being given the opportunity to have free coaching at Le Sport, as well as adults who can sign up for squash or racketball sessions.
Anyone interested in getting involved in the free coaching sessions should contact Le Sport 01492 547046.
