UP TO 500 athletes could be competing at the Marine Lake next year after a top events company announced its plans to host a triathlon in Rhyl.

Xtra Mile Events, which over the past couple of years has introduced two similar events in Llandudno and Colwyn Bay, will host the Rhyl Triathlon on Sunday, June 9.

The event, which will start at 8am, would see athletes tackle a 1500m swim at the Marine Lake, followed by a 44km bike ride through Denbighshire’s countryside before crossing the finishing line on Rhyl promenade after a 10km run.

A shorter sprint course will also be held, while family entertainment and a sheltered viewing area will also be provided at the Marine Lake.

500 places are available for the event, with a special discounted entry fee available for the first 200 entrants and prizes for the top three finishers in a series of race categories.

Entries close on 6 June or when sold out, with further information and entrys available at www.xtramileevents.com.
