LLANRWST United gained some much-needed minutes against high-quality opposition as preparations continue ahead of the new Lock Stock Welsh Alliance Division One season.

The Rwsters travelled to Central Park to take on Huws Gray Alliance runners-up Denbigh Town, and despite taking the lead early on, they suffered a 6-1 reverse.

United came out of the blocks flying and opened the scoring after just three minutes when Llyr Cawley fired an unstoppable effort past Craig Vernon and into the corner.

This provoked a strong response from the hosts, who levelled matters after 23 minutes when Sam Downey turned in a Jake Walker delivery, and Town grabbed the advantage for the first time just before the interval when a Sam Jones corner evaded everyone and flew into the net.

After the break saw the home side double their advantage on 63 minutes when Ross Weaver scored a neat individual strike, and things got even better for Matthew Jones and Dewi Llion’s side soon after when Mark Roberts headed in from close range after 65.

Recent signing from St Asaph City Walker notched a fifth for the hosts after another spell of pressure on 82 minutes, and the lively Roberts marked his home return for the club with his brace after 86 to complete the rout.

Despite the final result there were plenty of positives to take from the clash for the Rwsters, who will be looking to build on a hugely positive third tier campaign last term that saw them progress from relegation candidates to title contenders.
