FORMER Rhyl boss Matthew Jones is set to be announced as part of the new management team at Denbigh Town this week.

The Journal understands that Jones and Dewi Llion have agreed to take over at the Huws Gray Alliance side, with a formal announcement expected on Wednesday evening.

The duo will be taking over from Eddie Maurice-Jones, Richard Williams-Cooke and David Reese, who left Central Park earlier this month to spearhead the Lilywhites’ expected title challenge next term.

Jones took over from Mark Connolly at the Lilies in January, having been part of the backroom staff since 2016.

The squad underachieved and eventually finished in sixth position in their first season back in the second tier following their relegation from the JD Welsh Premier League, and chairman Paul Higginson and managing director Mike Jones decided to go in a different direction which saw Jones and Connolly leave their respective positions.

Jones is no stranger to the Town set-up having previously managed their reserve team, while he also enjoyed a spell at the helm of Llandudno Junction.

He works at National League side Wrexham AFC in the role of football projects co-ordinator for the Racecourse Community Foundation, and has coached the U13 and U16 sides at their Centre of Excellence.

Llion is another with close ties with the club, and they will take over a side that achieved the highest ever league finish in their history under Maurice-Jones last season, where they finished second behind HGA champions Caernarfon Town.

It promises to be a big summer of transfer activity for the club, with the future of many of the current squad now uncertain due to their fierce loyalty to Maurice-Jones and Williams-Cooke in recent seasons.
