A Rhyl football team has stormed its way to a cup final in its very first season.

Following a win on penalties against Flint Vets on Wednesday, May 9, Rhyl Vets will now head to Mold for the final of the Veterans Cup this Sunday.

The team, which fields older players from 30 to 51, was started in June 2017 by Rhyl footballers John Griffiths and former Prestatyn Vets player Alan Evans.

Mr Griffiths said: "With us both born and brought up in Rhyl playing football from an early age for Glans, Hearts, Rhyl Delta, Rhyl FC, Rhyl Town, Rhyl Athletic and Rhuddlan we have had the privilege of meeting and playing football with a lot of great, talented lads from the town.

"As we grow older a lot of players start having families and work commitments which unfortunately means they generally hang their boots up as they can’t commit to playing every Saturday.

"Alan and I spoke of this and the waste of great talent not playing anymore and went in search of a Over 35’s league which could both enable us to play again plus still have time for work and families."

"As we both don’t have any managerial or coaching experience we contacted our good friend and former Rhyl FC favourite Steven Jones - Jonah - who has played, coached and managed at higher levels in football to join us and help us out.

After finding a league organised by the late North East Wales League Secretary Mike Beech, Rhyl Vets became one of ten teams pledging support to Beech's wife Carol and daughter Nicki continuing Veterans Cup.

Mr Beech's league competition was split into two groups of five teams, with the top two of each group being entered into playoffs for the Veterans Cup final - which Rhyl Vets will now compete for having won all of their games this season.

The team will now face Group A rivals Shotton Steel Vets at 2pm at Rhydymwyn FC in Mold on Sunday, May 20.
