Prestatyn Running Club’s Golden Oldies got up a fine head of steam in last week’s Race the Train 5k in Caernarfon, claiming a hat-trick of course records.

Eleven members turned out in the popular race, with others failing to make the trip because of the floods around Rhyl and Prestatyn.

Conditions in Caernarfon were much more favourable, leading to fast times. Gareth Hughes broke the M70 record by just three seconds, John Hickman took more than two minutes off the M75 record and Roger Harrison-Jones entered the record books by becoming the first M80 to complete the course.

Placings : 25 Matty Smith 18.28, 45 (8th lady) Amie Bagnall 19.15, 66 Gareth Brandrick 20.23, 80 James Rogers 21.06, 89 Gareth Hughes 21.34, 122 John Hickman 22.49, 147 Paul Brandrick 23.51, 177 Katrina Brandrick 25.41, 179 Roger Harrison-Jones 25.48, 234 Debbie Cartwright 31.55, 240 Julie Evans 32.12.

The same evening Dean Longley and Andrew Bromley headed east to the Sale Sizzler 5k and also produced fast times. Dean clocked 16.23, his third fastest time ever, while Andrew, who has struggled in training recently, was happy to finish in 17.36.

A momentary lapse of concentration probably cost Clair Atterbury another pb in the Wepre Parkrun in Connah’s Quay. She went slightly off-course and finished the run in 40.02, just eight seconds outside her best.

In the Conwy Parkrun Debbie Weedman finished 208th in 30.09 and Alexandra White 270th in 33.39.

Meanwhile Mike Davis, on a trip to Kent, had hoped to improve his M70 record in the Sittingbourne Park run but lost his record by three seconds, finishing second in his class and 48th overall in 24.48.

This coming Saturday (29th) the club is holding another trip to the Dolgellau 5-mile race.
