Rhyl pulled off a notable double over old rivals Colwyn Bay to leap from fifth to second place in the table and reassert their promotion challenge.

On a hat-trick of defeats after losing 5-2 and 4-2, determined Rhyl cashed in on their chance to rescue their season by winning the only game in the entire division to be played. With all their rivals frozen off, Rhyl took the game to the Bay who were looking to avenge their 2-1 defeat in their earlier encounter at St Asaph.

Dominating play from the start, Rhyl’s impressive team performance finally secured the breakthrough when they were awarded a penalty after relentless attacking and Wayne Rickett stepped up to hammer the ball wide of the Bay keeper and send Rhyl in 1-up at the interval.

Rhyl were twice handicapped when midfield man-of-the-match Dave Kelly was sin-binned in a gruelling second half but Rhyl’s victory was assured when ice-cool Casey Dunn blasted home a short-corner to make him a goalscorer in Rhyl’s last three matches.

Now Rhyl will be looking for another double when they face formidable Alderley Edge, having won 2-1 away, in this Saturday’s return at St Asaph.
