CPD Y Rhyl 1879’s perfect start to the new season continued with a 3-1 victory in the FAW Amateur Trophy at Bodedern Athletic on Saturday (September 3).

Kieran Ellis would open the scoring on 21 minutes with a wonderful header: Chris Bennett out on the right sending the ball into the box, and with a diving header, Ellis fired the ball past Carl Jones in the Athletic goal.

Following a flurry of corners, Warren Adam would double the Lilywhites' lead just before the break.

Chris Bennett was again involved, sending a corner deep into the box and forcing Jones to punch clear.

But his punch was collected by Adam on the edge of the box, who saw the goalkeeper out of position and fired the ball into the goal with the sweetest of strikes.

On the hour, the home side were awarded a penalty by referee Iolo Williams following a mistimed tackle by Jordan Worthington on the edge of the box, which was converted by Casey Boylan.

Bodedern would be reduced to 10 men with eight minutes to go, as Daniel Jones was booked twice in quick succession, both for dissent.

Tom Cain would then keep up his impressive record of goal involvements late on.

Following a break down the left, the youngster made space for himself and put a wonderful ball in low and hard.

Ellis was able to beat the defender to poke the ball in from close range and to end the game 3-1 to 1879.

Manager Gareth Thomas said: “At half-time, we were good value for the 2-0 lead.

“In the second half, they changed things, got a penalty - whether it was or wasn’t - then they had a good chance where they hit the bar.

“But we showed character, and the subs have made an impact. Tom Cain has come on and put a great ball in for us to finish 3-1.

“But a hard-fought victory; it was never going to be easy. We are just glad to get through and into the hat.”
