CPD Y Rhyl 1879 continued their 100 per cent start to the new season with a 4-0 thumping at home to CPD Y Felinheli on Saturday (August 27).

It took 18 minutes for Rhyl to go a goal up, when a Chris Bennett corner from the right was sent in and was met by the head of Ifan Emyr, who headed the ball into his own net.

But they had to wait until 87 minutes to double their lead - Alex Jones sent a great ball in that was met by Jack Higgins, who headed the ball low and hard past Guto Hughes.

Higgins would then turn provider, with a great through-ball that found Jones through on goal, and he who fired first-time into the back of the net.

Jones would then get his second and the Lilywhites’ fourth when Tom Cain sent in a corner from the left, and he was able to beat everyone else to the ball to head home and complete the late flurry of goals.

Manager Gareth Thomas said post-match: ''It was hard-fought; they came here organised and got men behind the ball.

“We scored early doors, and created a few good chances in the first half that we didn't take.

“That was one thing I was critical about at half-time with the lads; I didn't think we were composed enough in front of goal. We missed plenty of chances.

“In the second half, we kept knocking on the door and I think the introduction of Jack Higgins changed the game, really.

“He brought us more to life, he got hold of the ball and we got into good areas, and we scored three really good goals late on. It’s pleasing to come away with a 4-0 win.''

When asked about next week's trip to Bodedern, he added: “On to the cup games now; that's the league game put to bed.

“We will train on Wednesday and we will look at the cup game next week.

“We know we have a few lads suspended for it, which was from last year, but we have more than enough players to fill the squad, we have players coming back from injury so we will be alright.''

Rhyl’s next outing will be away to Bodedern Athletic in the FAW Amateur Trophy on Saturday (September 3).
