RHYL’s 100 per cent record at the start of the new campaign continued with a 3-0 victory in the Welsh Cup against New Brighton Villa.

The Lilywhites were back in cup action following a perfect beginning to the Ardal Northwest season, and a great midweek performance that saw them run out 3-0 winners against Flint Mountain.

Deep into injury time of the first half, the deadlock was broken - Alex Jones, who had worked tirelessly all half, combined with Sion Williams on the left to cut through the Villa defence.

Williams then sent the ball across goal, where Jordan Worthington was waiting to fire in from close range.

Then, on 50 minutes, Tom Cain showed some skilful play out on the left wing, and was able to buy himself a yard of space.

This allowed him time to deliver a stunning ball onto the head of Macauley Taylor, who rose above the defence to head the ball with some power into the top corner.

On 77 minutes the game descended into an ugly scene - during open play and away from the ball, Jones was hit in the back of the head by a Villa captain, Samuel Wainwright.

A confrontation ensued, as players from both sides tried to separate the two. Once the dust had settled, both players were booked. Jones would be replaced shortly after by Warren Adam.

The game was put to bed on 83 minutes - Cain was again involved, as he was awarded a free kick out on the left, which he also took, and which Aaron White met to head the ball home.

Rhyl manager Gareth Thomas said: “Difficult place to come, we knew it was going to be hard, small tight narrow pitch, but to be fair to the lads, they have controlled the game for the 90 minutes.

“It took a while, we missed a couple of chances early doors didn’t test the keeper, but he did make one hall of a save off Sion at the half hour mark, and then we took a deserved lead on the stroke of half time which knocked the stuffing out of them.

“Then the second half started off, great move for the second goal and superb to have Macca back, and that’s what he brings us, his first game of the season, coming back after his injury in pre-season, ball out wide cross into the box and Macca beats the defender in a sprint and a great header, then we finished it off at the death when got our third goal.

“We are now in the hat, clean sheet and no injuries, rested a few today didn’t play James (Jones), didn’t play Kieran Ellis, Casey didn’t play, we rested Elliot and Jack Davies, we were able to rotate the squad today, which we said we were going do, to come away with a 3-0 win only gives us confidence going into next week’s game.”

Next up for the Lilywhites will be the visit of CPD Y Felinheli to Belle Vue in Ardal Northwest action on August 27 (2.30pm kick-off).
